As a general rule, the average price in the U.S. for
storing a fur coat over the summer months is about 50 dollars.
Cleaning averages an additional 50 dollars. Cleaning fur-
trimmed coats or shearlings costs more because they require a
more complicated process.
Costs for cleaning and storage are sometimes higher at large department store chains, depending on location. Independent fur retailers sometimes charge less, are quite competitive and usually offer the advantage of on-site storage. Professional cleaning and storage is also available now over the Internet and, typically of the new medium, this is the least expensive way to have your coat cleaned and stored. Peter Duffy Furs in New York City has a large fur storage and cleaning business, handling some 10,000 coats per year. Storage costs 45 dollars, including pick-up and delivery and minor repairs. Cleaning and glazing costs 45 dollars, slightly more for shearlings or fur-trimmed garments. "But remember," notes Eleanor Duffy, "we are fur wholesalers, so our prices are probably a lower than at most places in the country." They're not lower than at York Furriers in the Chicago suburb of Elmhurst, though. York charges 44 dollars to store and 40 dollars to clean furs, more for shearlings, according to family member John Wagner. In Beverly Hills, California, Somper Furs is also competitive, charging 45 dollars for storage. Cleaning fees range from 45 to 60 dollars, depending if the garment is a small jacket or a large coat, reports owner Wanda Presburger. Having your fur cleaned and stored by a department store can cost a little more than by an independent fur store, because department stores don't usually do the work on premises but send it to their regional or national centers specializing in this work. Storage might cost 40 to 60 dollars and cleaning another 40 to sixty dollars. Costs for local labor sometimes determine pricing. For example, you might pay more at the same department store in New York City than you do in Georgia. But beware, never pay more than 75 dollars for storage, no matter where you are and how upscale the store is, warns Terry Thornton, who is in charge of furs and coats at Neiman Marcus stores. EFurs.com has just begun offering professional cleaning and storage over the Internet. The cost for storage is 39.95 dollars and includes pick-up and delivery. EFurs charges just 20 dollars for cleaning a fur coat, 30 for a fur-trimmed or reversible coat and 40 for a shearling. But, eFurs will only clean your coat if you also store it with the company, notes Scott Rubman, president. Additional accessory items like hats and scarves can also be cleaned for half price. |
