Welcome to the Top 10 fur garments of 1998. For this Folio, Fur Age scoured the international collections to compile the 10 best ideas in furs that reflected this year's fashion statements. Sometimes they come from household names -- like Jean-Paul Gaultier's rustic kimono, John Galliano's bigger-than-life Erte influence, or Karl Lagerfeld's soft, silvery shimmer suede. Sometimes the names aren't so recognizable, but the ideas are big -- like Gilles Mendel's mink pullover or this fall's omnipresent fur-trimmed cashmere sweater by Buonuomo. Either way, these are the furs that reflect the mood of 1998.

To shake things up a bit, we decided to shoot them with vintage couture pieces from the past three decades. Some of the clothes under the furs are rare and may actually cost more than the furs themselves. While this points out how designers are still sampling the wares of different fashion eras for inspiration, it all comes together in a way that is timeless yet modern and very 1998.
