The Gucci show was like a trip to Gstaad in the 20's before skiing was high tech and when hiking up the mountain - with trousers tucked into your wool knee-high socks was the only way to ski back down. Well, Gucci brought their fur coat and accessory collection back to the nostalgic days when Switzerland had snow. Designer Frida Giannini celebrated the past in her new collection and may have created the endgame for winter wonderlands, with 70's ski references and all! Against a backdrop that evoked a ski lodge, Giannini offered up a charming, funny, and luxe-lite salute to the Alpen winter ritual but it was more like Alpine meets Boogie Nights! The men were dressed as 70's playboys; lots of long hair parted on the side, lots of facial hair as well and oversized colored sunglasses. First, the show opened with a dude in a gray wool suit and fur collar. The fun continued from there. Out came a fantastic coat of fat and extravagant fur worn over a chunky, white roll neck sweater and plaid pants. Get the picture? Then, one really funny and good looking fur bomber jacket mocked a 70's ski coat - with fur racing stripes going vertically down the coat - and the model carried a giant leather bag with a raccoon fur talisman! The snowboarding jacket was really smart - dropping past the knees made of leather and lined with fur the entire way. Then there was a black leather bomber jacket with curly lamb lining and one classic white ski coat, sort of a classic pea coat but with a brown fox collar and lining. Two favorites - in keeping with the Tyrolean idea - was a forest-green suede jacket (curly lamb-lined with leather-piped) in the style of a German hunting jacket and an anorak with giant fur collar and hood. The collection was perfect for James Bond especially the fur collared suede tuxedo that doubled as a ski suit and the burgundy astrakhan smoking jacket (it was so Daniel Craig!) Giannini aptly referred to the collection as Snow Glam. And the black fur moon boots were the feather in Gucci's proverbial cap. One normally associates Gucci with sex and not with fun, but this collection gave the double whammy. I don't know about you, but I'm going skiing with Gucci this winter! |
