Lot of the furs shown in the winter collections seems to be all purpose and MADE for summer! Is this an indication that designers are trying to make fur a year round fashion? One would think so. The most outrageous cotton candy pink confection was a wrap made by Emmanuel Ungaro - it wrapped around the shoulders then had additional sleeves for those cool summer evenings. Like Ungaro's pink wrap, Peter Som's fluffy over-the-shoulder ostrich feathers seemed perfect for the Ascot scene - the fluffy spotted feathers were something more likely found on the Queen's hat. Gaultier trooped animals down the runway alongside his lightweight fluffy, golden fur wrap - that would look good with a tan and worn with a flippy flirty skirt. But it was an odd collection, it must be said! Another one of the odder summer fur moments was Martin Margiela's bright yellow - almost Tyrolean looking pullover fur that would only make sense to wear if you were hiking the Swiss Alps in summer! You did have to wonder how these furs - if they weren't made for summer - would ever keep you warm in winter? Especially Blumarine's tangerine orange sleeveless fur cape merely rested on your shoulders. Or Emilio Pucci's beautiful pale blue/gray pile of fluff that sat on the shoulders and was tied with a satin bow. Beautiful yes and absolutely perfect over a frilly summer dress. Still, Vera Wang showed a truly four weather fur - a lightweight, paper-thin Lippi cat coat worn over a sheer chiffon dress. The sleeves of the coat were ripped; at mid-forearm and there were no buttons. The magnificent coat was just draped over the dress and looked so thin that you'd imagine it felt cool on the skin. The grande finale in the 'made-for-summer' furs shown for the Fall Winter 2006 collections was Missoni. The color schemes for her collection was subdued so there were lots of Easter egg pale shades of curry, gray and nude with colorful leggings. But you could only think of ONE season when she showed a giant fur clam around the neck of one of the models and worn with a yellow flowered dress. Let's hope it's a cool summer! |
