If you want to wear fur now, you have three options: first you could go to Goteberg Sweden where temperatures right now are hovering in the 40's or South Dakota which just had its first snowfall of the season. Or if you're more realistic, then you stay put in the Northeast or Northwest and find yourself this seasons almost fur option: the bolero jacket or fur trimmed suits and coats. The must have jacket right now is the capelet or bolero. The shoulder shrug/bolero/capelet is this season's replacement to the jean jacket. It's also the fur coat that you can buy now to satisfy your impatience to nest in a cozy fur coat but without being overdressed and hot. Of the vintage inspired boleros shown for Fall 2005 ready to wear, Fendi did some adorable bolero capes that drop over the shoulder. Celine showed a capelet in this season's plum and paired it with A-line skirts and flared jersey dresses. This sort of luxe simplicity is perfect for carrying off this transitional fall season. Probably my personal favorite though, is the Dior coat. Well you could barely call it a coat. It's more like a bunch of pelts stitched together. This caramel-y colored fabulous John Galliano creation falls off your shoulder like the pelt had been sliced and measured and then dropped right over your shoulders. Awesome! If you're sticking with safe and warm, then the fur-trimmed options will suit you: literally! Most everything you will find in the way of suits is trimmed in fur on the hems of the sleeves, on the collars and even at the cuffs in some cases. Celine does a beautiful take on the prim and proper suit laden with fur lapels and snuggly neck wraps. While the clothes are relatively uncontroversial, the suits and coats with dyed-fox collards feel deluxe. Fendi offered a lot of fun options with fur trim. One of their fur-trimmed pieces included a sheer pink dress trimmed in fur the edge of the sleeve, the neck and around the hem of the dress flipped with fur in wonderful frothy layers. Trim seems to be the way forward for the next month everywhere. Take Bottega Veneta where Tom Maier used a lot of leather, fur neckpieces in caramel and black leather with fur collar and cuffs. His neat suits and gray tweed coats trimmed with fur were matched with full-skirt jersey dresses, sheer sweaters, and chiffon kilts. The final nail in the fur-trimmed coffin is Dries van Noten's very drab feeling show that fashion-ized the old-lady-in-the-tattered-wool-with-fur-collar-look. The idea: Bohemian Europe in the 40's think plumy salt and pepper tweeds with fat fur collars. This is the Portobello Market special! You've seen it before but you'll still want to buy it or take the old one out of your closet. But my new favorite of the fur-trimmed options was Balenciaga. Sure everyone is talking about the toggle-buttoned coat with fur trim at the sleeves (THE COAT OF THE SEASON!) What was even better: the jean suit with fur collar. GENIUS (or should I say jean-ius!). Whatever the case, the sleeveless jean suit with fur collar and fur capped sleeves is exactly what I want to be wearing now - as I long to wear fur any kind of fur on these, almost, but not quite cold enough days. You will too! |
