![]() This winter has been a bonafide celebration of decadent fur fashion and accessories. So it's no surprise to discover that the ultimate event for wearing your favorite furs is back in fashion too: Ice-skating. Who can resist the romantic image of the fur muffler, hat and full white skirt twirling on a frozen pond under a starry black sky? Not me. There's nothing like being wrapped up in fur on a crisp cold night as you glide across the ice, the only sound, the scraping of the blades. Let's start with the euphemistic muff: Designers including Ralph Rucci and Michael Vollbracht at Bill Blass showed large stylized muffs in sable, fox and mink. Fashion and function rule - Vollbracht muffs have zipper pockets so it doubles as a change purse. It all adds up to a season where designers are utilizing furs in a modern even practical way. Just look at New York furrier Adrienne Landau's booming business in mink, rabbit and fox muffs with pockets to hold lip balm and money. And for the ultimate in ice-skating chic, Michael Kors did fantastic Dr. Zhivago style fur hats. Weather permitting, it seems that ice-skating is going to be a trend that's here to stay (every winter from now on, that is).Designer Karl Donaghue is working on a whole ski and ice-skating collection for next season that is winter sports-glamour based. The only challenge now is where do you find a warm pair of skates?! |
