Ah, September. The kids are back to school, your fall wardrobe is organized in your closet, and you can't wait for snow to fall, right? Snow? Slow down, you say? If you're a diehard fashionista, you're already past that, and you're anticipating this month's runway shows for next spring. Here in real life, though, we still have our air conditioners running and are just now picking through the weighty September magazines to decide what we absolutely HAVE to wear when cooler weather arrives in, say, another four or five weeks. Here's rule one: Fur is a MUST!

Fur is an integral part of every key fall look, whether it's goth, glam, romantic, tribal or bohemian. Just check out these five iconographic looks. You can't have missed them, unless you've been visiting a different fashion planet. They're the most visible designer advertisements from the most high profile designer labels featuring the most photographed individual garments of the season exhibiting fall's most important trends. What do these fashion icons have in common? They all prominently include fur, of course.

In the name of individual style, this fall's trends sometimes blend together. Even many of the retro glam looks have a bit more of a relaxed attitude, less stuffy than past seasons of super luxury. To simplify, though, fall's best trends break down to just three. Try them, mix them, find what works best on you!

Goth looks boil down to one word: Gucci. Or maybe that one word should be black. Gucci's goth girl wears a necklace, a craftsy sweater and fur, just like the other trends. She's a bit sleeker, though, and has much more of an edge. Nearly any fur would work for her, from a fox shoulder wrap to a knit beaver coat to a shearling vest, as long as it's black. Of course, for more of a tough girl, make sure the leather side of the fur is showing, which means wearing shearling or reversible mink.

Topping a classic turtleneck and trousers with fluffy white fur makes the outfit instantly glam. Wearing a fur collar on a body-conscious evening jacket is super-glam. This fall's glam looks are a little retro and hopefully a lot ironic. Fur pairs glamorously with satin and shimmery gold, but think more Grace Kelly and less ghetto fabulous. White mink, natural coyote, chinchilla and voluminous fox dyed calm colors are glam, but no neons allowed.

Call her bohemian or a flower child or tribal/ethnic, there is a little wild child in almost every look this fall. She's free-spirited and lush, loves rich colors and textures and embraces the creativity of global artisans. Think fur boots are a bit crazy? Dior's wild child loves them. Curly, tibetan lamb is perfect for a wild child, as are tufty, knitted furs, shearling vests and even an embroidered, reversible sable sweater. Remember, there is a little romance in everything the wild child wears.
