Some of the fur looks in the Fall 2002 Haute Couture collections weren't quite as splashy as the ones featured here last week. That is, if ANYTHING trimmed in sable can be called discreet! Yet designers splashed fur strategically for texture, color and drama. Sometimes it seemed like an after thought, as in Balmain's Russian-look fox hat thrown over a little sable-collared fitted brocade coat, while elsewhere it was integral to a Galante purple dyed-fur collar that offered whimsy to a schoolgirl sweater. Other designers -- like Versace and Torrente -- played tricks with what seemed like fur trim, when actually the rest of the garment contain fur too. Torrente knitted fur for the body of his cape, then trimmed it with more fur. Versace's exquisite sable collar was just an introduction to a gold wrap dress threaded with sheared mink. Gaultier's gold dress with shredded fur looks very much like the pelts were worked fur-side in to comprise the entire dress, with tufts of fur cut through to create the fringe effects. These show great fur craftsmanship that's subtle on the eye.
