![]() This story is for all the men who have written to furs.com in the past year asking why it's so hard for them to find fur coats for themselves. For Fall 2002, designers in Canada, one of the world's top fur-garment producing countries, are listening. In their biggest fur fashion show of the year, they actually presented men's furs as an important trend. It's about time! As fur styles have become more street-wise over the past few seasons, men have demanded their share. Yet beyond the runways of the Sean John collections, whose furs weren't even sold to the public, men haven't been satisfied with what's available. And when they hit the fur stores, they often find themselves trying on women's coats in larger sizes. The only problem is, foisting off women's cuts on a male torso doesn't always work, and guys have been left wondering why the coats don't fit properly. There's a shocker! Designers who showed during the North American Fur & Fashion Exhibition in Montreal this spring finally offered up some options. "Fur for men this year is affluently casual, natural with a wild edge but totally manly," says Teresa Eloy of the Fur Council of Canada. "Browns, grays, brown-gray and black are the hues of the moment, and duffle coats, pea jackets and car coats with hoods are the preferred styles." Some samples shown here run the spectrum from a rough-and-tumble camouflage shearling vest to a sporty sheared beaver parka to a superglam chinchilla coat. But if you still don't find styles like these at your local fur store, here's why. Most fur retailers don't sell a lot of furs for men, so they don't invest in expensive stock to keep on hand. When they have a request for a man's fur, they're perfectly happy to call a supplier and have it shipped to them for your approval. That way you get your fur and the retailer doesn't have to speculate on whether his stock will sell. But you can't be bashful about asking for what you want. Or, you can have your fur made the old-fashioned way: to measure. The made-to-measure fur business couture style is alive and doing quite nicely, though it requires a bit of advanced planning on your part. If you want a coat made-to-measure to wear this fall, you should be booking your appointment with a professional furrier right about now. It can be slightly more expensive than buying off the rack, but if you're a tricky fit, very particular about the cut of your coat or just want the knowledge that your fur was made specifically for you and nobody else, this is the way to go. Yes, you'll have to be measured, and you'll most likely have to return at later dates for fittings, but that's what proper tailoring is all about. Most importantly, men's furs are about attitude. There's nothing worse than seeing the fur coat wearing the man (or woman, for that matter). Pick a style that's comfortable, fits your lifestyle and makes you feel great. Now you have some more choices! |
