![]() The fashion press gathered May 21 at the Puck Building in SoHo, New York City, to see a condensed showcase of the New York fur market’s Fall 2002 collections. Presented by the Fur Information Council of America, the runway show emphasized fur's versatility with different styles gathered and grouped into sections called "Broadway," "SoHo," "Upper East Side," Lower East Side," and "Nightlife." Representing the different styles of New York and the many moods of New Yorkers, the show highlighted the many moods of fur designers this year, from distressed-look shearlings to snappy, corduroy-mink jean jackets, to the simple elegance of a well-cut Barguzin sable short coat. Complementing the runway show was a still life presentation, where technically advanced furs could be viewed up close on stationary mannequins. Like last year, the group fur showcase was the centerpiece of New York's Fur Fashion Week, traditionally held the third week of May. Additional, individual designer shows were held during the week, but the number of these is declining as designers increasingly choose to feature their furs during their New York ready-to-wear shows in February. Even so, the fur shows serve a purpose the ready-to-wear shows can't. While designers often must balance fur looks with their entire collections during ready-to-wear shows, the fur shows offer a broader look at fur style. Many of this year's international ready-to-wear shows focused on furs that were either extremely young and funky or especially glamorous. The fur shows -- even including this condensed showcase -- present some of those styles but also filled in some of the gaps.
