London is definitely not known as a fur-friendly town, especially in a country that has outlawed fur farming. But when its experimentally minded designers took over Fall 2002 Fashion Week in February, there was a surprising number of fur looks. Of course, past violent protests sometimes have encouraged London designers to use what poses as fur or shearling. This year the mink and fox are mostly real and used in highly imaginative and glamorous ways. Just check out the fur-swathed tie-up heels at Ghost. Julien Macdonald became the darling of the fashion press with his full-on '70s glam-rock skinny suits topped with unapologetically ferocious fox capes and coats. Tristan Webber turned on the luxe with crimson dyed chinchilla used as a collar on a shimmering evening suit and even worked mink with a flounced effect to texture a jacket. With designs like these, who cares if London's spotlight designers Stella McCartney (who doesn't work with fur anyway) and Alexander McQueen defected to Paris for the season. London designers are starting to show they've got the guts to go for it.
