Furs hit the spring haute couture runways of Paris last month in two distinctive collections. John Galliano continued to be the standard-bearer for fur-as-fabric in his Christian Dior circus carnival tribute to Russian art and culture. Prevalent were boots of rough-hewn fur that appeared inspired as much from moccasins or mongolian traders as Russian military. You had to look closer to find tufts of blue tibetan lamb incorporated into one coat. A brown and beige melange of patchwork and hides and accent squares of red leather was the most interesting fur and one that most looked like it could jump off the runway and onto a chic city street, despite its pointy shoulders. A theatrical patchwork coat incorporated fox, white tibetan lamb and spotted fur. The most obvious form of fur -- exaggerated, oversized hats -- could well have been made from some fur-look imitation.

Legendary designer Yves Saint Laurent said good-bye to the fashion world with a show that toured his 40 years of fashion. Two of his most famous furs were included in the tribute: a leafy green fox chubby and a black croc-print patent leather short coat with fur.
