Black or white, restrained or primitive, shearling or broadtail: how many more opposites can any season embody at once? The surprise is that, these are all part of the season's fur biggest trends. Think designers are confused? Maybe, but each, in his or her own way, is responding to the outrageously ostentatious luxury of the past few years. Enough is finally enough. When the economy hits the doldrums, how can you possibly keep ratcheting up your level of opulence before consumers revolt?

Still, most of the lucky people who actually wear clothes made by these designers still crave the next, big thing, and it better not be made of burlap. So instead of jettisoning furs altogether, designers have simply reworked them, so they're not so stuffy. The direction of choice seems to be two-fold: furs that are toned down in classic shapes or nearly as low-key as the old-money horsy set; or pelts that are or roughed up with a ferocious, rock-and-roll primitiveness that no one would mistake for ladylike.

An Angel? If you're happy fashion has finally come back down to earth, and you tend to favor conservative suits or weekend denim, you're more likely to choose a fur this season from the following looks: shearling, denim finishes, winter white, a sweet little hand muff/handbag, a pared-down broadtail lamb suit, or a fur with an equestrian blanket theme.

A Devil? If you're fed up with all the glitz and want to add more or an edge to your look, you're more likely to favor looks from quite a different avenue: a crazy, oversized trooper or Daniel Boone hat, fur cuffs up to your elbow, moody black, a lynx-cat bomber jacket, or even a Janis Joplin-inspired vest.

Don't worry, if you're both an angel and devil -- aren't we all? -- then anything goes!
