An explosion of colorful, sophisticated and sometimes crazy but always luxurious furs lit up New York City's May Fur Fashion Week, as 23 U.S. furriers banded together under the umbrella of the Fur Information Council of America one night to offer a fur fashion presentation that included a live runway show, a still-life exhibit and even home furnishings for fall 2001.

The theatrical runway show, produced by Hollywood stylist Cary Fetman, paid tribute to Hollywood glamour, opening with a film tribute to movie stars wearing furs. It continued by presenting furs separated into categories for different moods and lifestyles, such as luxe, urban chic, color, city sophisticate and hip hop.

Featured designers included: Adrienne Landau, Aggelo for Mink Mart, C. Granston Bullard for Nouveau Riche, Stefania Sarre for CPL/Fantazia, Cynthia Rose, David Goodman for Buonuomo, Denimaxx, Donald Deal for Kyros Furs, Ekso by Athanasios for Alexandros, Eric Gaskins for Miller & Berkowitz, Evelyn Paswall for Imperial Sable, Halston for Alexandros, Helen Yarmak, Jon Karas for Karayiannis Brothers, M.J. Ernst for York Furrier, Fleur and Mike Mosler for M.T. Beauty, Oscar de la Renta for Alixandre, Paula Lishman, Royal Chie, Lina for Tendler Furs, Zandra Rhodes for Pologeorgis, and Zuki International.

Home furnishings were displayed by Alexandros, Alixandre, Ariana, Adrienne Landau and Transfurmation. Also on display was a Lucite-covered fur dining arrangement -- complete with fur table accessories -- by David Goodman for Buonuomo.

The still-life display showed interesting new techniques on mannequins, allowing retailers and editors to get close enough to touch and explore intriguing details, such as laser-cut sheared mink, reversible furs (without linings) and knit furs, special effects that sometimes get lost on the runway.

Fur retailers called it one of the best group events ever produced by the U.S. fur trade.
