Happy 2001! Looking back, we've got plenty to celebrate
about the year 2000. Fashion epitomized classic, movie star glamour reminiscent of classic Hollywood
stars like Marilyn Monroe. For today's young style icons, fur was key to getting the luxe, luscious
look. A veritable Who's Who of actresses and legendary supermodels made the scene in fur, and we've
got a record number of photos to prove it.
From Catherine Zeta-Jones's va-va-vavoom fox-trimmed evening wrap to Julia Louis-Dreyfus's sassy mink bustier, stars chose fur for making dramatic entrances at award shows and movie premieres. Others like Uma Thurman and Christina Ricci slipped into something sexy for major fashion magazines. Cate Blanchett sat front-row at a fashion show basking in curly shearling and taking the casual approach. Hipster Kate Hudson and her mother, Goldie Hawn, showed fur crosses the generation gap. So did new and original Angels Lucy Liu, Farrah Fawcett and Jaclyn Smith. Jennifer Aniston, Lisa Kudrow and Courteney Cox Arquette were fur-wearing 'Friends'. Cuba Gooding Jr. and Chris Rock took an ironic, ghetto-fabulous approach to fur fashion. Rosanne Arquette (who appeared in an InStyle feature on animal lovers) and Melanie Griffith (whose mother, Tippi Hedren is a famous animal caretaker) proved that we can love our pets and still enjoy fur fashion. Former fur-hating supermodels Naomi Campbell and Cindy Crawford also got into the fur-wearing act. Does this mean PeTA's era of intimidation is over? This year's Dunce Cap winner Sarah Michelle Gellar wouldn't say so. After she appeared in W magazine's October 1999 issue wearing fur, she became the target of the animal rights group Friends of Animals. As a result, Gellar apologized for her fur-wearing ways, writing, "I will make a conscious effort for this to never happen again." Extremists never go quietly, and furs.com is expecting quite a few complaints about this story. Sometimes e-mailers claim their favorite stars must be faking it. But one thing's for sure: none of the furs in these photos look like their authenticity is even up for debate, with the exception of the very, very dark furry coat worn by Julia Roberts. The letters and e-mails should be a lesson to every fur-lover in 2001. Make a New Year's resolution: when you see a photo of a celebrity wearing fur in a magazine or on the Internet, make your feelings known! Write to the magazine, the Web site and the celebs themselves, and tell them how gorgeous they looked! You can bet they'll hear about it from fur-bashers, who have well-organized letter-writing campaigns. It seems most celebrities still care what people say about them, so say nice things! That way we'll have more to celebrate as we approach the year 2002. |
