the new york collections
The very idea of suggesting any kind of similarity between beautiful, expensive new designer furs and vintage, flea market finds would heretofore have cause protest -- despite fashion's frenzied reliance on references lately. But this seems to be an instance of street-influenced fashion, with designers taking a cue from what teens, models and sometimes celebs wear on their own time. Last winter, those on the fashion edge were picking up vintage furs or fur-trimmed coats to top their trendy '60s and '70s ensembles. These received a stamp of fashion legitimacy when worn by the throngs attending the New York ready-to-wear shows in April. "Why don't furriers make new coats like these?" asked one perplexed woman, all the while trying to fluff her ratty, aged pelts. Well now they are. Flash back through the 1920s, '30s, '60s and '70s for dramatic collars, empire waistlines, animal prints, persian lamb, short chubbies and long-haired trims. And, get ready for '80s hard edges.
