By now even its most staunch proponents are wondering what trip they were on when they promoted acid green as the IT color of last spring, and more than a few eyebrows were raised at the subsequent screaming shade of orange. But don't let these peculiarities make you shy. One of the biggest designer messages coming from the New York runways for fall '96 was that fur garments can and should dare to be colorful. Directional shades included '70s-inspired whisper soft tones, cyber chromes and even moody millennium blackened versions. Stinging claret red, however, was the popular designer favorite, coexisting with other color stories and even standing alone in collections that otherwise carried almost no color at all.
