"Wow, furs are really back, aren't they," commented a visitor to the New York ready-to-wear shows last week after witnessing fur trims take to the catwalks in a myriad of Fall '96 collection premieres. Saga Furs of Scandinavia -- and New York fur manufacturers -- can take a lot of credit for the trend, having supplied fur trims for more than 20 ready-to-wear designers.
Saga's second annual American Designer Initiative encouraged about 17 designers to work with fur for the first time. Saga -- Scandinavian farmers' international pelt marketing organization -- supplied the pelts; New York manufacturers supplied the labor, and Tubari the dyeing. In most cases, the fur-trimmed garments appeared in the designers' own shows at Seventh On Sixth in Bryant Park.
The same garments will appear in Saga's own show during Fur Fashion Week in May, which will also showcase a group of fur stoles by new and established fur designers.
